Podcast
Hello for my love of parenting parents – welcome back. Happy August! For me August just flew in. And I have so much on my plate – that I am trying really hard to get things in my life in order. I think we all can relate!
So, on my last podcast, I mentioned that I started a new role and that I needed to create a space that was all my own – done/checked that off my list. But for many of us
You’ve done it. Our space is ready
The piles are gone, the dust has settled, and the once-forgotten corner or chaotic spare room has been transformed. It’s clean, organized, and sprinkled with those little details you handpicked — the throw blanket that feels like a hug, the candle that smells like calm, the plant that freshens the air just by existing.
It’s yours.
But now comes the question: Now what! How do you actually use it?
You’re not alone if you’ve created a beautiful spot only to find yourself… not actually sitting in it. We often put so much effort into getting a space “just right” that we forget the real magic happens when we make it part of our life.
This is the week where your space shifts from “pretty to look at” to “irresistible to spend time in.”
Step One: See It as More Than a Chair, Desk, or Corner
Your space isn’t just physical. It’s symbolic.
It’s proof that your time matters — and that you matter outside your to-do list. Whether you have an entire room or a repurposed nook in the living room, this spot is your cue to pause, exhale, and return to yourself.
From a productivity standpoint, that means using it for things that fuel you: journaling, brainstorming, meditating, crafting, or simply thinking without interruptions. The more often you associate your space with intentional moments, the more your brain will see it as a go-to zone for creativity and restoration.
Step Two: Build It Into Your Daily Rhythm
It doesn’t have to be a three-hour block (though that sounds dreamy). Life will often hand you time in crumbs — five minutes before school pickup, ten minutes while the pasta water boils, fifteen minutes before bed.
Those micro-moments matter. They’re like mental snacks that keep your energy and focus steady.
Here are a few quick ways to make the most of short visits to your space:
- The slow sip – Enjoy tea, coffee, or sparkling water without scrolling your phone.
For me, I have started getting up early and just sitting still (like my favorite scripture - Psalm 46:10 “Be Still and Know that I am God”. There is also a wonderful song by @Yolanda Adams – "Be Still". If you have not heard it. You should listen to it.
I sit in my lounge chair with a warm cup of apple cider vinegar tea sipping slowly – expressing gratitude, recapping my previous day – manifesting what I want my current day to look like – I write in my Journal – I really just reflect and image and set my course for my life. As I am trying to do some different things in my life.
Then I walk on the treadmill for 15 minutes – sometimes fast and steady, with an incline and pumping music and sometimes a slow and smooth walk is fine. I go with my mood. No, pre-determined plan – just me – being free.
- The page-at-a-time read – One poem, one chapter, or even one paragraph.
- The deep breath reset – Three long, intentional breaths can shift your whole mood.
- The mini stretch – Roll your shoulders, tilt your head side to side, and let tension go.
- The one-line journal – Capture a thought, idea, or gratitude.
It’s not the length of time that matters most — it’s the intention.
Step Three: Protect It Like It’s Gold
Here’s the truth: your space is only as sacred as the boundaries you place around it. Interruptions — kids, partners, pets, buzzing phones — are constant. But when you step into your space, you’re making a promise to yourself: I’m here for me right now.
That might mean:
- Closing the door or drawing a curtain.
- Putting your phone on Do Not Disturb.
- Letting your family know you’ll be available in 20 minutes — and actually holding that line.
And the harder boundary? With yourself. Resist the urge to “just” do the dishes first or “quickly” check email. Every time you give in, your brain learns your space isn’t a priority.
Step Four: Let It Evolve With You
Your space doesn’t have to stay frozen in the day you set it up. It can — and should — grow with your needs. Swap a chair for a floor cushion. Rotate books. Add a new scent. Tuck away something that now feels distracting.
I’ll be honest — I’m still working on my own space. I may even share it once it feels ready for its big reveal. But even in its “in-progress” state, I’ve learned that what matters most isn’t perfection. It’s using it, protecting it, and letting it be my little escape hatch when life feels like too much.
Final Thought
Listen, your space doesn’t just exist for you to look at — it exists for you to live in. Whether you have two hours or two minutes, claim it. Let it spark your creativity, refill your energy, and give you the freedom to simply be you.
Until next come, take care!
